EDT vs EDP vs Parfum: What Perfume Concentrations Actually Mean

Last updated: 26 July 2026

EDT vs EDP comes down to a single variable: the percentage of aromatic compound suspended in alcohol. Eau de toilette carries 5–15%, eau de parfum 15–20%, and parfum — also sold as extrait — 20–30%. Higher concentration buys longer wear, not louder projection, and confusing those two things is where most buying decisions go wrong.

Every fragrance you own states its concentration on the box, usually in small type near the volume. It is the most useful piece of information on the packaging and the most widely ignored. Two bottles from the same house, carrying the same name, can behave like entirely different fragrances depending on which side of that line they sit — different longevity, different projection, and often a genuinely different composition rather than the same formula made stronger.

What Is the Difference Between EDT and EDP?

Eau de toilette contains 5–15% aromatic compound and typically wears for four to six hours. Eau de parfum contains 15–20% and wears for six to eight. The remaining volume in both is largely alcohol, plus a small proportion of water. More compound means more material left on the skin after the alcohol evaporates, which is what extends wear.

What that percentage does not tell you is how the fragrance is built. Houses rarely produce an eau de parfum by simply adding more of the eau de toilette formula. The EDP version is usually reformulated — heavier on base notes, lighter on the volatile citrus and aromatic top notes that would be wasted at higher concentration. This is why an EDP can smell warmer, rounder and less bright than the EDT it shares a name with, and why preferring one does not mean you will prefer the other.

Worth knowing: these percentage bands are industry convention, not law. No regulator enforces them. A house can label a 14% composition as eau de parfum, or a 16% one as eau de toilette, and neither is a violation. Treat the concentration as a strong signal of intent rather than a guaranteed specification.

How Long Does Each Concentration Last?

In temperate conditions, expect two to three hours from eau de cologne, four to six from eau de toilette, six to eight from eau de parfum, and eight to twelve from parfum. In Indian summer and monsoon, subtract roughly a third from each of those figures — heat accelerates evaporation regardless of how much compound is in the bottle.

Perfume concentrations compared
Name on the box Aromatic compound Longevity Projection Sits Best for
Eau Fraîche 1–3% 1–2 hours On skin Post-gym, immediate refresh
Eau de Cologne 2–4% 2–3 hours On skin Hot mornings, classic citrus
Eau de Toilette 5–15% 4–6 hours Arm’s length Daytime, office, winter
Eau de Parfum 15–20% 6–8 hours Beyond arm’s length Full days, functions, year-round
Parfum / Extrait 20–30% 8–12 hours Close to skin Evening, humidity, intimacy

The projection column is the one people misread. Parfum concentrations project less than eau de parfum despite lasting longest, because the higher oil ratio holds the composition against the skin rather than releasing it into the air. If you want to be noticed across a room, eau de parfum is the peak. If you want a fragrance that lasts all evening and is discovered only at conversational distance, parfum is the answer.

Which concentration should you buy?

Choose what you are buying for.

Eau de Parfum

15–20% aromatic compound · 6–8 hours

Air conditioning dries skin and speeds release, so an eau de toilette applied at 9am is gone by lunch. EDP holds structure through a full working day while staying inside a courteous radius.

Concentration Is Not the Same as Quality

A higher percentage does not make a fragrance better. It makes it last longer. A well-composed eau de toilette from a serious house will outperform a carelessly built eau de parfum on every measure that matters except duration — balance, note development, how it smells at hour three rather than minute one.

Davidoff Cool Water is the standing example. It is an eau de toilette, it has been in production since 1988, and its aquatic-aromatic structure is more coherent than a great many modern EDPs. Buying it in a higher concentration would not improve it; it would unbalance it.

The reverse case is equally real. Azzaro The Most Wanted Parfum is built as a parfum from the ground up, with a warm, dense base that would make no sense diluted to eau de toilette strength. The concentration and the composition were designed together.

The words that are not concentrations

Several terms on fragrance packaging look like concentrations and are not. Intense, Elixir, Absolu, Extreme and Noir are naming conventions, not measurements. They usually signal a darker or heavier reformulation, and they are frequently — but not always — released at eau de parfum strength or above. Check the small type rather than the flanker name.

Parfum de toilette is an older term, largely retired, that sat roughly between EDT and EDP. Aftershave is a different product entirely at 1–3%, formulated with soothing agents for post-shave skin rather than for wear. Eau de cologne means two things depending on context: the 2–4% concentration band, or the classic citrus-neroli style of fragrance that originated in Cologne. Neither usage means “fragrance for men.”

Which Concentration Should You Buy in India?

Eau de parfum is the default answer for most people in most Indian cities. It survives the heat penalty with enough hours left to cover a working day, it projects adequately without dominating an air-conditioned room, and it is the concentration most houses treat as their primary expression.

Reserve eau de toilette for North Indian winter and for daytime wear in Bengaluru or Pune, where the climate is forgiving enough that four to six hours actually materialises. Reserve parfum for evenings, for monsoon, and for the occasions where you want the fragrance to last past midnight without filling the room. Our guide to perfume longevity in Indian humidity breaks the adjustment down by city and season if you want the specific hours for where you live.

If you are building a first rotation rather than replacing a single bottle, start with one eau de parfum you can wear anywhere and add a lighter eau de toilette for hot mornings. Our beginner’s guide to choosing a perfume covers how to structure that properly.
