Yves Saint Laurent Kouros is a legendary, polarising fragrance and one of the boldest scents ever made. Aldehydes, coriander and clary sage open it clean and sharp, a floral heart of jasmine, carnation and geranium sits over honey and spice, and a famously animalic base of civet, honey, leather, musk and oakmoss gives it its unmistakable, love-it-or-hate-it character. Pierre Bourdon created it in 1981.

This is a cold-weather, evening and formal fragrance, and it demands a light hand: one or two sprays is genuinely enough, because it projects hugely and lasts eight to twelve hours. In Indian heat it becomes overwhelming fast, so it belongs strictly to winter nights and air-conditioned occasions. It smells clean and skin-like to some and animalic to others, so it is worth trying before committing.
