Bal d'Afrique is the Byredo to buy first, and the warmest thing the house makes. It opens on African marigold, bergamot and buchu — bright, green and a little fruity — then moves through cyclamen and violet into a base of Moroccan cedarwood and vetiver. Most woody fragrances turn dark and seasonal; this one stays sunlit enough to wear in any month.

It is one of Ben Gorham's earliest compositions, built from his father's diaries of travelling in Africa — an imagined journey rather than a literal one. Genderless by design, like everything Byredo makes.

Is this fragrance right for you?

That said, Byredo build for artistry rather than projection: it will not fill a room the way a Middle Eastern oud or a Parfums de Marly does. If you want power, look elsewhere in the catalogue.
