Santal 33 is the fragrance that made Le Labo a household name and, by some distance, the most recognisable niche scent of the last fifteen years. Composed by Frank Voelkl in 2011, it was built around a single image: sitting alone on the plains of the American West, firelight on your face, nothing around but desert wind.

It opens on cardamom and papyrus — dry, green and slightly peppery — then the wood alloy arrives: Australian sandalwood and Virginia cedar, smoky rather than creamy. Violet and iris sit underneath and give it a powdery lift, and a leather accord and amber close it out. People describe it as pencil shavings, new notebooks, warm skin and woodsmoke.
